Before the Deepikas and Katrinas of Bollywood, there was Rani Mukerji, the reigning queen of Hindi cinema. In the 90s Rani ruled millions of hearts with her acting talent and her brown-eyed charm. Her foothold over Bollywood continued post the millennium too but with the entry of other players in the field, Rani’s reign wavered for a few years. But with her fiery release Mardaani last year, Mrs Aditya Chopra made clear that she is here to stay. Ghulam

Rani entered the industry without a Godfather or a mentor of sorts. She took up odd films like Mehendi and Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat but none of those movies bore fruit. Then came her way the Aamir Khan starrer which kick-started Rani’s career with renewed zest. What happened after that is history!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

She may not have been the one who got the happily ever after in the Karan Johar phenomenon but Rani’s presence in the Shah Rukh Khan Kajol starrer wasn’t one to be missed. Post KKHH, Rani and SRK’s on-screen jodi became one of the most loved jodis of all time!

Work with all the Khans

With Ghulam and KKHH and also Hello Brother, Rani became one of the very few actresses in Bollywood to have worked with all the Khans, something which continues to be a big deal even today!

Saathiya

Rani began her popular reign as the uncrowned queen of romance in Bollywood. With films like Hum Tum and Chalte Chalte under her belt she quickly became a dream girl of sorts for the audience. And then came Saathiya, the Vivek Oberoi starrer film which was the freshest romance of it’s time. It was an instant hit with the viewers!

After having cemented her position in the industry as the best romance actress, it was time for Rani to push boundaries and challenge the actor with in. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Amitabh Bachchan starrer came at such a perfect time in Rani’s life and what she did in the film is stuff of legend!

Mardaani

After films like No One Killed Jessica and Bombay Talkies Rani gave her career a break and concentrated on her personal life. Her relationship with YRF’s head honcho Aditya Chopra wasn’t hidden from anybody and they sealed the deal last year. By now the audience started gravitating to films featuring other actresses, but Rani gave them a reason to return,the reason was Mardaani.

National award

She was recently felicitated by the government with a national award for Mardaani for the Best Representation of the Cause of Safety, Security and Protection of Women and Girl Child.
