Spirituality is the answer to fight drug addiction, according to a university in Haryana. Hisar-based Guru Jambheshwar University (GJU) is giving a major boost to spiritualism as a solution for a drug-free country, and for this it has roped in spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

The varsity is organising a one-day Drug Free India programme where Sri Sri will be addressing the students on the benefits of having a sound consciousness to fight drug addiction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also join the event through video conferencing and address over 20,000 students.

On being asked why pick a spiritual guru for the purpose, Prof Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of the university feels that Sri Sri has shown the right path of life to lakhs of people through his international brand of adhyatma. "He is charismatic and has also been working towards helping the society get rid of this evil through his own drug-free India campaign," he said.

GJU is also looking to propagate its solution to other institutions. And for that purpose, the varsity will be telecasting the programme live across 3,200 government and private educational institutions.

Senior officials said that the All India Council for Technology Education (AICTE) has sent a directive to all colleges and universities to telecast Tuesday's programme live. Not just GJU V-C Kumar but his counterparts from other universities in the state will also sign an MoU with Sri Sri's foundation for spirituality focused drug de-addiction programme that will be run jointly by the two bodies.

The other components of the agreements will focus on public health and awareness. "Different programmes all year round will counsel youth to prevent them from falling into this trap," Kumar said.

The university is working to make the mega event a success as it is likely to be attended by around 20,000 students from the state. The authorities have brought in chairs from neighbours Punjab and Delhi and the state police has deployed 500 cops in the city for the programme. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will also be present at the event.

GJU will also confer an honorary doctorate on Sri Sri for being the "guiding light" for countless people across the world.
