In a decision that might affect thousands of students from reserved backgrounds, the Maharashtra government has asked aspirants of all professional courses like Engineering, MBA, MMS to submit their caste validity certificates right at the time of admissions.

Ammending the earlier norm wherein students from SC, ST, OBC, NT backgrounds would have to submit their caste validity certificates within two months after their admission, the new regulation makes it mandatory for students to submit their certificates at the very admission time.

With hardly any advance notice, thousands of students who are set to join professional courses in the academic year 2018-19 are likely to lose out on their seats as the process of getting a caste validity document takes anywhere between 15 days to 2 months. Besides the time constraints , students would find it difficult to even apply for a certificate as it requires them to be studying in their previous institute from where they would get their certificate issued for the admission to professional courses. The admissions for most professional courses have already kick-started and are expected to get over by the end of this month.

The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) urged the officials at the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) to give students time until November 2018 to submit their certificates. "The decision would keep thousands of students from reserved categories away from courses like engineering and management" said Aniket Ovhal from ABVP Mumbai.

A DTE official said that a recommendation has been sent to the government to extend the time given for submission of the documents.
