A full-fledged campus in Dubai is soon going to be a reality for the 160-year-old University of Mumbai as it is set to expand its global base under the new Vice Chancellor, Dr Sanjay Deshmukh. The University is soon set to have a campus in Dubai, offering several undergraduate courses in humanities.

“With a view to make the brand of the University of Mumbai global, the hunt for a place was on. We have been successful in finding a place in Dubai for a campus, and have also found someone to fund the university for the same, and are looking forward to starting the courses soon,” said Dr Sanjay Deshmukh. The proposal for setting up the campus was recently approved by the University’s Academic Council.

Deshmukh said that three undergraduate courses in Economics, Sociology and Psychology would be offered at the campus. “We have decided to begin with these three subjects considering the popularity and demand for these subjects from the students” he added.

While more details on where the campus will be, what will be the fee structure are still awaited, the university plans to start the course as soon as all the permissions are in place. “We will recruit the faculty from Mumbai and the campus would start as soon as all the permissions are in place”.

Only online programmes in USA

Earlier this year, Deshmukh had announced that the university was trying to find a place to set up an offshore campus in USA. However due to high costs involved in setting up a university, Deshmukh said that the university now plans to have only online programmes from one of the existing university’s campus to begin with. “Having a physical campus would be a very costly affair at this point, which the university cannot spend. We have offers from a couple of universities to set up our own online university within their campuses, which seems like a feasible option. Online learning programmes are becoming quite popular amongst students,” said Deshmukh.
