Amid the ongoing debate in many Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) whether to continue granting diplomas instead of degrees, after the Autonomy Bill, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has asked the institutes to convey their plans to the Ministry and form their rules by the end of this month.
After the IIM Bill came into regulation early this month, all these institutes have become autonomous and are authorised to give degrees but some of these institutions had conveyed it to the Ministry that they want to continue granting diplomas.
Till the time they form their own rules ministry will oversee their functioning.
Chairpersons of all IIMs had a meeting with the HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday where they discussed their ideas on how they want to form their rules and go about the functioning of these institutes. Even after autonomy, the ministry will play the role of auditing and overseeing authority as the annual report will be presented in Parliament every year.
The ministry also asked IIMs to award degrees according to the guidelines of the UGC. All IIMs were conveyed this through a letter sent to them on March 8.
