Students of Class 10 will soon go through an aptitude test to know what they are capable of, or interested in doing after high school.
The test has already been designed by the Central Board of Secondry Education (CBSE) and handed over to the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry. According to Ministry officials, the test will now be passed on to National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which will start conducting the test shortly. Starting this year, the NCERT will be a survey based on learning outcomes on students in Classes 1 through 8.
The CBSE-deisgned aptitude test will determine the career stream that a student may want to choose after Class 10 — Science, Commerce or Arts.
Understanding that many students choose a particular stream either under peer or parental pressure, the government has decided to ease the process and help the students find out what suits them best. “It was sensed that many students take up a stream due to peer pressure and then either end up degrading their performance or change the stream, hence we want them to get clarity on what they are capable of,” said a CBSE official. Over the past one year, the Board designed questions for the test.
The students will be tested on reasoning-based questions like any other competitive test.
Earlier, the CBSE was supposed to conduct the survey by taking an oral feedback of students on what their interest is. However, it was changed into a more in-depth exercise later. Sources said that schools will also use the result of these tests to award a stream to a student. Currently, schools use a student’s Class 10 percentile in subjects they want to choose, to offer them the stream. But once the aptitude test becomes a regular feature, it will be used to determine the stream.
