Want your date of birth on your car's number plate? Soon new car and two-wheeler owners will be able to get fancy number plates up to Rs 25,000 (jumping numbers) from the store dealers directly instead of going through the e-auction. The Delhi government's transport department plans to introduce the facility to make the process hassle-free as well as to boost the income of the department. The proposed policy, according to sources, has been approved by Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal and is awaiting a Cabinet decision.

Currently, new owners had to apply online and go through an e-auction to get the registration numbers of their choice. However, for numbers in categories above Rs 25,000 (VIP numbers), the existing procedure of e-auction.

"The policy for allotment of fancy numbers up to Rs 25,000 directly through the dealers during the purchase of the vehicle was proposed by the department and has also received a nod from the L-G. The policy will be finalised after it goes through the finance department and is put up in the Cabinet for a final decision," said sources.

The policy will also allow "retention" of old numbers on buying a new vehicle through the dealer.

The policy intends to urge more people to be able to buy the number of their choice. For affordable numbers such as these, owners at present have to go through the process of applying online and getting a demand draft made.

"These can be interesting numbers such as date of births, lucky numbers or different numbers such as 1234 etc," they said. The department introduced the e-auction for fancy numbers in 2014 in order to boost its income.
