A 35-year-old woman died while her husband and son sustained multiple stab injuries following a scuffle over a petty issue in West Delhi's Khayala on Wednesday evening. Police said that her husband and son are critically injured.

According to the police, they received a police control room call at around 7.30 pm informing that a fight broke out between one Sunita and her neighbour 40-year-old Mohammad Azad in Khyala DDA colony when the woman was returning from a local market after buying groceries. A senior police officer said that when a police team arrived on the spot they came to know that Azad had stabbed Sunita, her husband and her son following a violent altercation.

"Locals told that after Azad and Sunita had an argument, she narrated the incident to her son Akash (18) who rushed to Azad's house, right in front of their house, and allegedly started abusing him for getting into an argument with his mother. On this, Azad stepped out of his house and had a fight with Akash. Seeing his son being overpowered, Akash's father Viru also rushed out of the house to help his son," said the officer who is not authorised to speak to the media.

Locals told the police that during the fight, Azad took out a knife and stabbed both Akash and Viru. Seeing this, as Sunita came out, Azad also stabbed her multiple times. As locals gathered on the spot, seeing all the three bleeding profusely, Azad fled from the spot.

Locals then made a PCR call and reported the incident. Police said all the three were rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital in Khyala where Sunita was pronounced dead while Viru and Akash are critically injured. The couple also has an 8-year-old daughter who was inside the house and therefore, remained unhurt.

A senior police official said that teams have been formed to search Azad who is on the run.

"Initial probe revealed that three days ago when the couple's daughter returned home from school, as she was climbing the stairs of her house, her water bottle fell off. One of the Azad's family members narrowly escaped being hit by the bottle as the bottle fell near him. On this, Azad had an argument with the child's parents. Locals told the police that Wednesday's murder was a fallout of the Monday's argument. However, we are yet to ascertain it," said the officer.

Police said that they are probing if anyone else apart from Azad was involved in the murder. A video of the family members lying injured was in circulation on social media late on Wednesday evening in which Viru is seen lying in a pool of blood.

Police said Viru is into a business of dyeing cloths and his son Akash assists him at work while Azad works at a battery repairing workshop.
