A desire to reach that elusive weight that the fashion industry has set as standard for youth, coupled with gross medical negligence, had brought Kamla Nagar resident Shweta Singh on the brink of death. Fortunately, life gave her a second chance and she was saved just in the nick of time. Now, the 22-year-old's blog about her experiences is a guiding light for many in the same age group and grappling with similar pressures.

Recalling that harrowing time nearly three years ago, Singh said: "I started trying to lose weight during the second year of my college. My aim was to shed a few kilos quickly. I started crash dieting, which eventually led me to trouble. I did not eat proper food. Some days, I would eat a single meal. Over a period of time, I developed uneasiness and breathlessness."

She also started experiencing frequent episodes of heavy coughing, despite being a non- smoker. To add to her woes, the doctors at a private clinic diagnosed her with tuberculosis.

"Daily activities would tire her, leaving her gasping for breath. She was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis on the basis of her coughing patterns. She was prescribed TB medication, which obviously had a wrong reaction on her body. Her legs started swelling, leaving her in pain and her family in utter confusion," said Dr Sunil Prakash, Senior Consultant and Director, Nephrology and Renal T, BLK Super Speciality Hospital.

According to doctors, on one occasion, a drastic blood pressure variation forced Singh to go to emergency, where it was revealed that she had contracted jaundice and was actually suffering from chronic kidney disease, which had led to renal failure.

"Her weight had come down to 46 kg. Luckily for her, she soon found a donor after an 18-year-old girl was brought brain dead to the hospital," Dr Prakash said.

Finally, after a renal transplant nearly six months ago, Singh has slowly started reclaiming her life. She does not feel uneasy anymore and has moved on to a healthy diet. She has also turned into a blogger to guide the youngsters who are forcefully starving themselves to lose weight.
