The Delhi Police arrested two criminals of a gang, which had barged into the house of a property dealer at Dabri in Dwarka in the morning of August 8, held the entire family hostage on gunpoint and robbed Rs 84 lakh cash and jewellery.
The accused, identified as Vaibhav Srivastav alias Himanshu (26), and Lalit Mishra (20) were on the run since committing the robbery. They were nabbed by the police near Metro Pillar No. 802 on the Najafgarh–Uttam Nagar road at night on Saturday, said Anto Alphonse, DCP (Dwarka).
Both the arrested criminals had set out at night to commit another heinous crime in the Dwarka area before they were nabbed after a brief scuffle. Robbed cash amounting to Rs 9.15 lakh, one loaded pistol with three live rounds of .32 mm and one stolen motorcycle have been recovered from their possession, the DCP said.
On August 8, six armed robbers had entered Pradeep Kumar Gupta's house at Vijay Enclave in Dabri and held the entire family hostage on gunpoint. Gupta was stabbed by one of the robbers when he put up the resistance on being asked to hand over keys of almirahs. While the six robbers were plundering cash and jewellery inside the house, six more were keeping a watch outside the house.
CCTV cameras in and around the area were scanned, history-sheeters were interrogated and dump data of all mobile calls in the vicinity of the crime scene were analysed, the police said. Soon eight persons were arrested and a major portion of the robbed articles were recovered. However, four of the six main accused who had entered the house, and had direct involvement in the crime were still on the run.
On Saturday, the police received a tip-off that Vaibhav and Lalit would be coming from Najafgarh towards Dwarka to commit another crime at about 8 pm. The police team laid a trap and about 8:10 pm, a motorcycle with two riders was spotted coming from Najafgarh side. On sensing police, they tried to weave through and flee but were unsuccessful. On being trapped, the pillion rider wiped out a pistol to fire at police but the police swooped on them and after a brief scuffle, both of them were overpowered. The duo could not produce any document of the motorcycle which was verified by records and found to be stolen.
On sustained interrogation, they confessed about their involvement in the robbery. At Vaibhav's instance, Rs 5 lakh cash hidden in a washing machine was recovered from his house. Lalit led the police to his house from where Rs 4.15 lakh cash was recovered.
Vaibhav revealed that he is a cab driver and has recently purchased a cab attached with a cab aggregator. This had put him under a financial constraint. While Lalit works as a helper at a dental clinic in Tilak Nagar and spent a major part of his income on his girlfriend and now he was in dire need of money.
