The east district of the Delhi Police has arrested two interstate robbers including a sharpshooter of an active gang after a brief encounter on Tuesday morning from Karkari Mod. The police said that they have recovered a sophisticated pistol and three live cartridges from their possession.
According to the police, they had arrested an accused identified as Sandeep Narang in one of the theft cases from the Jagatpuri area on Monday. During interrogation, he disclosed that his partner Salim, a resident of Bareilly would arrive in Delhi for committing another crime with him.
"Following the information and the previous record of Salim, an interception plan was made to apprehend him near Karkari Mod. Around 4.15 am, Salim was seen coming on a blue scooty and was signalled to stop," said Pankaj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).
However, after seeing the police picket, he turned back but fell down with his scooty and instantly opened fire at the police.
"In retaliation, a cop fired a shot in the air and warned him to surrender but he fired a shot again pointing towards the police. A bullet hit a head constable on the chest portion of his bulletproof jacket. One shot hit the right leg of the accused and he fell down," said Singh.
The accused was rushed to a nearby hospital and a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered.
During the interrogation, it was revealed that Salim was a sharpshooter in the Chenu Pehlwan gang active in North-east Delhi, involved in cases of dacoity, murder and attempt to murder. He has as many as 30 involvements in Delhi alone. He has a notorious reputation of firing at police pickets.
