Two held for duping foreigners, Delhi Police suspect larger network

According to the police, around two or three complaints are received every month in New Delhi about foreign nationals being duped by various agents who overcharge them.

The Delhi Police have arrested two touts, who duped foreign tourists and charged them exorbitant prices for basic activities such as shopping, a tour of the city and booking travel packages. The arrest of the duo has revealed that they are part of a bigger syndicate that works in connivance with the travel agents.

According to the police, around two or three complaints are received every month in New Delhi about foreign nationals being duped by various agents who overcharge them. Most tourists complained to police through emails after leaving the country. They either e-mail the complaints on their own or through their travel agent.

"The two arrested have been identified as Tariq Ahmad and Gulzar Ahmad. They are brothers and were caught red-handed while trying to talk to a couple of female tourists outside Shangri-La hotel in the area," said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi district.

They were cheating foreign tourists in the name of booking holiday packages or taking them to markets for shopping, said Verma. Connaught Place, in the heart of the national Capital, is one of the busiest markets which is frequented by foreign tourists.

The accused would plan holidays for tourists in Kashmir and make them buy things at a whopping price. The duo has told police that some travel agents also work along with them and they kept them informed about new tourists. The brothers are part of a bigger gang, police suspect.

A case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Connaught Place police station.
