Next time someone offers you a lift on the Delhi-Badarpur border highway, stay alert as the one with a smile on his face could make you cry; end up thrashing you and take away your belongings.

The Delhi police has unearthed a gang of criminals who would rob commuters on the Badarpur border highway on the pretext of offering them lift.

Two arrested have been identified as Rajdev (22) and Pardeep (23) both residents of Etah, Uttar Pradesh.

They used to pose travellers going towards Uttar Pradesh from Delhi's Badarpur border, however before the destination, the duo along with two other associates would rob the passengers they had offered a lift.

"Both the accused, along with two other associates used to pose as commuters and offered lift to other travellers and after reaching a dark and isolated place they would rob them on gunpoint," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Chinmoy Biswal.

It was after a complaint filed by Tikam Singh (24), who alleged that four-person had robbed him after offering a lift to Etah, that the police started investigating on the case.

Singh alleged that the gang took five thousand in cash and withdrew Rs 25,000 from his bank account via ATM card which they had taken from him along with the pin.

Based on a tip-off the police team raided Etah and arrested Rajdev, who later disclosed the whereabouts of Pradeep along with the car used in the commission of crime and the money robbed.

During investigation Rajdev confessed that he was a school drop out and drove cab to earn money. However, with declining profits, he started to use the car for criminal purposes and also lured his three friends to join him in the crime.

Initially, Rajdev and Pradeep would offer lift to travellers and after some distance their other two associates Ashok and Jaiveer would also join, who would later help them rob the passengers.

The police team has recovered the car used in the commission of crime along with a country-made pistol and a live cartridge. However, the robbed money was partly recovered as two gang members are still absconding.
