Two persons who worked as assistants with an ambulance service company were charred to death and another injured after a fire broke out inside an ambulance in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar area in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The duo was sleeping inside the ambulance and had lit a coil when the heavy winds initiated a spark and it eventually led to the fire. The winds were at such a high speed that two other ambulances parked near it were also gutted.

According to the police, a call was received at 12:56 am on Tuesday about a fire in an ambulance. Four fire tenders reached the location to douse the fire. Rahul (24) and Guddu (25), sleeping on the back seat, were charred to death while their colleague Subodh (40), who was on the driver's seat sustained burn injuries. They all worked for Rana Ambulance Service.

Speaking to DNA, the owner of Rana Ambulance Service SP Rana said that Guddu and Subodh were on duty while Rahul was off duty. "Since there was a storm and it was dusty they were sitting inside the ambulance. Because there were a lot of mosquitoes they had lit a mosquito coil as well. The winds were at such a high speed that a spark was initiated and the fire occurred," Rana said.

He also said that materials inside the ambulance are highly flammable including pillows and bed sheets. "The interiors are made of fibre which is why the fire spread quickly. The winds were too strong and the ambulance was in between two other ambulances which was also engulfed in the fire," said Rana.

Subodh is undergoing treatment at the Safdarjung Hospital and is unfit for a statement. While Subodh was working for the past one-and-a-half year, Guddu had joined only 15 days back and Rahul would work on a contract basis.

"A case under Sections 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against unknown persons at the Malviya Nagar police station. The forensics team was called to ascertain the cause of the fire. The bodies were handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination on Tuesday afternoon," said Romil Baaniya, DCP, South.
