Single screen theatres in the Capital that are lying vacant or are on the verge of closing down, may soon get a new lease of life if the Delhi government agrees to use them for holding coaching classes.

The National Association of Motion Picture Exhibitors (NAMEP) have approached Lt Governor Anil Baijal with the suggestion to make these cinema halls available for education purposes. Baijal, on the other hand, has referred the matter to MM Kutty, chief secretary, Delhi government to devise a feasible way out.

According to the association, the current definition of Delhi Cinematograph Rules 2008 has a 'restrictive' definition of cinema halls which says that only productions by cinematographers will be allowed to be screened. This is contrary to the guidelines laid down— prior to 2008 amendments — that considered theatres as auditoriums.

"Right from the time cinema halls were constructed in the Capital, they were seen as prosceniums that showed not only movies and documentaries but also hosted talks, lectures and symposiums. Since 2008, they limited the use of halls for only movies," said Shashank Raizada, secretary, NAMEP.

The NAMEP has approached the government to make theatres more open to public use, especially the single screens as they are gradually falling victim to changing times. "They can be used to hold classes for competitive examinations during the morning show times. Not only single screen, a lot of multiplexes do not have morning shows at times and they too can be utilised constructively and help owners earn some revenue," Raizada added.

Citing the Maharashtra Cinematograph Rules, the office bearer shared that a lot of states have brought about the necessary changes, making cinema halls available for purposes other than movies.

"The government needs to redefine the definition of auditorium as mentioned in the 2008 rules. It should be made more inclusive so that single screen theatres that are lying neglected can get some business," he said.
