A four-year-old girl was crushed to death by a speeding truck near a construction site in outer Delhi's Narela on Monday morning. The girl's parents work as labourers at the site. The child, identified as Durga, had gone out to relieve herself when the accident took place, the police said. The errant driver was apprehended and the truck was impounded.

According to the police, Durga was sitting by the road to attend nature's call at 8 am. The spot was barely 200 metre from the construction site where trucks and vehicles regularly ply.

"While leaving the site, one of the trucks slipped into a pit. To get the vehicle out, the driver accelerated, but could not control the speed. He did not spot the child sitting by the road and she came under the truck and died on the spot," the police said.

People working on the site rushed to the spot and caught the driver and handed him to the police after thrashing him. The police have lodged a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence against the driver and the body of the child was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.

Locals and family of the deceased child also staged a protest against the construction company demanding proper facilities for defecation. They alleged that their children have to go to deserted areas at odd hours which lead to unfortunate accidents like this.
