The Ghaziabad police arrested Jet Airways Vice President (Security) Col (Retired) Avneet Singh Bedi on charges of grabbing land in a prime location of Uttar Pradesh district's Sahibabad area. He was arrested from his residence in South Delhi's Panchsheel Park late on Saturday night. The arrest came amid a drive launched against land sharks by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's administration.

Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police Akash Tomar said Bedi was arrested for illegally grabbing 800 sq m of municipal corporation land. The police are interrogating him for more details.

An FIR was filed against 11 persons, including Bedi, on June 21 in Ghaziabad. The FIR states that an inspection was conducted at Chikambarpur village along Delhi-Ghaziabad GT road on May 30. The lekhpal found in the inspection that there was a massive encroachment on khasra number 57. The land was found to be encroached by 11 persons identified as Sunil Kumar, Subhash, Anaar Singh, Shahnawaz, Khemchandra, Jay Raj, Vimla Bedi, Manohar Bedi, Avneet Singh Bedi, Digvijay Singh and Guneet Singh.

"Vimla Bedi, Manohar Bedi, Avneet Singh Bedi, Digvijay and Guneet Singh had encroached 532 sqm of land. With a tin shed, they had rented out the property to one VRL logistic transport company. They were also using the corporation's 268 sqm of land for a passage. When documents related to land ownership were asked for, the accused failed to provide the same. This land is one of the costliest of the corporation as it has close proximity to Delhi," the FIR reads.

Media reports quoted Bedi's family as saying the police never asked for any property papers. They said the land belongs to Bedi's mother and was bought in 1958.

The corporation said that drive against land sharks would continue. Ghaziabad Mayor Ashu Verma said that so far 172 FIRs have been lodged against land sharks for distorting the beauty of Ghaziabad.
