For 17-year-old Meghna Srivastava, the world stood still after she scored 499 out of 500 and she turned out to be the All-India topper in Class 12 CBSE exam result declared on Saturday. At 99.8 per cent, Srivastava's total score is highest in the last five years.

Neither Srivastava nor her parents had expected such a big feat. At around 1 pm, a call from friends broke the news to the topper, who studies at Step By Step school in Noida.

"I had not expected to top at all. When I got a phone call from my friends saying I had topped, I thought they were playing a prank. I knew I would score well, but this was not even remotely what I was expecting. And then, I found myself surrounded by countless cameras," said the topper, who is from Humanities stream.

Srivastava, who has scored a 100 in four subjects and 99 in English, said that it was her hard work and consistency that led to her success. The Noida girl wants to pursue Psychology now.

"There was a lot of stress. However, my parents asked me to take it lightly. For some days, I just relaxed. Then in the last five days, I studied again," Srivastava said about the re-exam.

Her parents Gautum and Alpana, too, said they had not expected such a result.

"We had not thought of it. It will still take a day or two for the feeling to seep in. She would study on her own and take enough breaks. I'd say that she had good planning and has been consistent throughout," said her father, who is an associate professor at Manav Rachna International University.

The parents also said that the school and teachers had a big role to play, as they organised the pre-boards well.

Meanwhile, the second All-India topper scoring a total of 498, Anushka Chandra, a resident of Ghaziabad, said she was thrilled to know the result, as it was a little above her expectations.

"I got to know my result from my mother on the phone while I was returning from Open Days sessions conducted at DU. I want to study Political Science (H) and I want to be a civil servant," said Chandra.
