In a strange case that took place in Narela, cremation of a woman was stopped by locals on the suspicion that she was murdered by her husband. The neighbours later informed the police and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Police stated that one of the deceased's neighbour reported the matter to them suspecting the husband's role in the woman's death. Police have detained the husband after contradictions were found in his statement.
The incident took place on Monday when a police team arrived at a cremation ground in Narela and asked the husband, identified as Kanhaiya, to stop the cremation ceremony of his wife Neelam. Police said they were informed by one of the woman's neighbour that he was carrying out the cremation of his wife, along with some of his friends.
"The neighbours also said that they had heard the couple fighting ferociously late last night after which she was found dead in the morning. When police reached the cremation ground and questioned the husband, contradictions were found in his statement. He was, therefore, detained for questioning and the matter is being probed," said a senior police officer.
Police also said that the man had initially told the police that his wife died a natural death but when confronted by the cops, he said she committed suicide. The neighbours also said that no one from the woman's family was present at the cremation. Police have approached her family to know more regarding the matter and her body has been sent to Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of her death. The couple also has a one-year-old child.
