A 21-year-old student was killed and his friend critically injured when a speeding vehicle hit the scooter on which they were travelling late night in Mukherjee Nagar area on Thursday. Police are trying to identify the vehicle and identify the accused.

According to the police, the incident took place around 11.30 pm when the deceased who was identified as Sumit, a native of Sonepat, was heading towards GTB Nagar metro station on a scooter with his friend Navin. Witnesses told police that when they were a few metres away from the station, a speeding vehicle rammed into the vehicle from behind, flying at a distance.

"While Sumit sustained fatal injuries in head and spine, Navin was also critically injured. Hearing the noise of crash locals gathered at the spot and police was informed. The duo was rushed to a hospital where Sumit was declared brought dead while Navin is under treatment," said a senior police officer.

Police said that they are checking CCTV footage from the area to zero down on the offending vehicle and reach the errant driver. The body of the deceased has been sent for a post mortem examination and his family was informed, police said. The duo used to stay in a rented accommodation in Mukherjee Nagar and were preparing for competitive exams.

EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT

Witnesses told police that when they were a few meters away from the station, a speeding vehicle rammed into the vehicle from behind, throwing the duo meters away. Police said that they are checking CCTV footage from the area to zero down on the offending vehicle
