Special Cell of Delhi Police nabs 46-year-old in organised crime case

According to the police, on Friday, the accused was identified as Surender Singh Sodhi alias Shammi, a resident of East Delhi.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested a 46-year-old man wanted in a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA) case, the police said. The Delhi Police had earlier declared a reward of Rs 50,000 against his arrest.

According to the police, on Friday, the accused was identified as Surender Singh Sodhi alias Shammi, a resident of East Delhi. A .32 bore pistol and five live cartridges have been recovered from his possession at the time of his arrest. Investigating offcials received an information that Shammi a wanted criminal has been hiding in the area of West Delhi.

A police team was deployed in the area and on Friday they were informed that the accused would be coming to meet his associate in Moti Nagar area. "Around 2:40am he was spotted and taken into custody by a team of officials. Shammi has cases registered against him not just in Delhi but he also in Mumbai and Haryana. He is a high-profile criminal who is fond of driving expensive cars, visiting five-star hotels and partying in the upscale bars and pubs of Delhi and Mumbai," said Pramod Kushwah, DCP, Special Cell.

Shammi has 14 cases registered against him. He dropped out of school after class 10 and fell into bad company. From the time he was in school he was involved in attacking people with a sharp edged weapon. Between 1990 and 1992 he was arrested in four such cases. He was also arrested in an assault case along with notorious gangster Hemu Gujjar, who was also his classmate in school.

He also got in touch with criminals like Syria Pehlwan, Prakash Shukla,Yashbir Fouji Rohtash Pandit and others. He was declared Bad Character in of East Delhi's Shakapur police station only when he was 21.
