A 48-year-old naxalite has been arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell. With his arrest, police have recovered 45 prohibited bore cartridges of India made INSAS, a Self Loading Rifle (SLR) used by the security forces of the country from his possession. According to the senior police officials, 48-year-old Ajeet Ray has allegedly been involved in insurgent activities since 1990. He was arrested from Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra, police revealed on Sunday.

Police said on Saturday, specific inputs were received by the police, stating that Ajeet Ray will be coming to Bhamar Garh Road Near Mannewar Colony All Palli, under the jurisdiction of Aheri police station, Garchiroli district in Maharashtra, a team lead by Inspector Ajay Kumar laid a trap and Ajeet Ray was arrested, police said.

“With the arrest of an arms dealer one Ram Krishna Singh by the Special Cell on July this year, our personnel were tipped off about Ajeet Ray. During Ram’s interrogation, he disclosed that he provided cartridges from Bihar to Maoist commanders through his contacts in Ghadchiroli, Maharashtra,” said Pramod Singh Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

“During sustained interrogation, Ram told the police about Ajeet Ray, a well-known arms supplier for the naxalites in Maharashtra, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Ajeet was revealed to have been in the arms dealing trade since 1990. Several efforts were made to arrest him but he always managed to give police a slip” said the DCP.

According to the DCP, teams were deployed in Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra to nab Ajeet. He was earlier arrested by Odisha police in 2005 and 2008, but he got bail and absconded. A reward of Rs 2 lakh was declared on his arrest by the Delhi Police.

Police said that they have recovered 45 cartridges of prohibited bore of INSAS and SLR from his possession. “During his interrogation, it was revealed that Ajeet Ray is an active CPI (Maoist) sympathiser and ammunition supplier. He was a civil contractor before getting into contact with Maoist Influences. He disclosed that he indulged in crime since 1990. He used to provide logistic support to CPI (Maoist) dalam. Earlier he was providing logistic support to Shankar Anna, a Maoist commander,” said the DCP.

It was revealed that Ajeet Ray was detained by Mulchera police station, in Gadchiroli, Maharastra, in the year 1992 for being a Maoist supporter and closely associated with Maoist commander Santosh Anna. He was also arrested in Odisha, in a fake Indian currency note (FICN) case in the year 2005. He was arrested by Odisha police again in the year 2008 along with three other Maoists, said the DCP.

“Ajeet Ray also confessed that he is an absconder in all the cases and never attended the court after being released on bail. His associate Raj Bahadur was also arrested in this case. Raj Bahadur used to procure cartridges from security personnel. The cartridges were then supplied to Maoist through accused Ajeet Ray” Kushwah added.
