A day after the Delhi High Court was informed by the Public Works Department (PWD) that the long-delayed construction of the Signature Bridge across river Yamuna will be completed by October, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia inspected the bridge to take note of the ongoing work. He also announced that the bridge will be opened on October 31 for the general public.

"The Signature Bridge would be opened for public use by October 31. It's going to be one of the most important tourist destinations in India. A glass box at 154 mt height would be the top most viewpoint from where we can have a look at our city (sic)," Sisodia tweeted.

The bridge, which was supposed to be ready for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was declared a white elephant by the AAP government. Although a budget of Rs 1,131 crore was sanctioned for it, till now Rs 1,575 crore has been spent. The ambitious Delhi government project located in Wazirabad to connect north and east Delhi is yet to see the light of the day. Being constructed under the aegis of the Delhi Tourism Department, the bridge, besides improving connectivity, is touted to be a major tourist attraction.

The Rs 1,500 crore project was proposed by the Sheila Dikshit government in 2004 and received a nod to start work in 2007.

The bridge got environmental clearance in 2011 and was set to be completed by December 2013. The date of completing the project was pushed to June 2016 and then to July 2017, which was further postponed to December 2017.

The vigilance department of the state government had found alleged irregularities in the construction of the bridge. The report stated that the issues are "mainly related to cost escalation", and will be looked into by the PWD and Vigilance departments and will be fixed soon.
