Four people, including a Sub-Inspector posted in the east district, have been arrested for allegedly taking money from the people on the pretext of exchanging their old currency notes.

A person identified as Saifuudin registered a complaint in this regard on November 22. In the complaint, Saifuudin stated that he arrived in the Capital on November 7 with Rs 18 lakh in cash.

A day later, the government banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

"My relative Mohammad Amanatullah Wasim introduced me to a person, identified as Shailendra Singh alias Sonu, whom Wasim knew for the last two years. Sonu informed me that his sister Payal worked in a bank and could get my cash exchanged. I met them at the Tilak Nagar Metro station and handed over the cash to them,"Saifuudin stated.

After taking the cash, the sister-brother duo refused to meet the victim or his family, making one excuse or the other. They would claim that a part of the money had been exchanged, but the remaining was taking some time. The complainant made several attempts to contact them but all in vain.

Finally, he registered a case under section 420 (cheating), and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Tilak Nagar police station.

Investigation into the case led the west district police to four people, including Sub-Inspector Sudhir Rathi posted at the Kalyanpuri police station. The others were identified as Ranvijay, a part-time insurance agent, Rohit, who took tuition classes for livelihood, and Ankur, who was unemployed.

The brother-sister duo claimed that they had handed over the money to these four and they themselves were cheated. Their role in the matter is under the scanner.

"The four took the money and split it among themselves. Rs 5 lakh was recovered from them," a senior police officer said.
