The pet peeve between Delhi government and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation of fare hike was once again brought to fore by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia at the flagging off ceremony of the Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake-Shiv Vihar Metro on Wednesday. The 17.86 km-long elevated section, which is now operational, was flagged off by Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri along with Sisodia.

While addressing the crowd, Sisodia indicated the need to make Metro economically viable. "The section running on east Delhi network will be used mainly by working-class commuters since the area is populated by them. Hence, the authorities must try to bring balance between expanding metro's network and making it affordable," he said. The Aap Aadmi Party (AAP) leader also said that the Metro should not be caught in civil romanticism, the focus should rather be on increasing its reach to every stratum of society.

Declaring the Metro project a global success, Puri said, "The journey that started in 2002 has passed the 300 km mark to reach 314 km. The Metro project in Delhi is a global success."

DMRC's Managing Director, Dr Mangu Singh, in his welcome address, said that the Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake – Shiv Vihar Metro corridor was going to be the first ever Metro section of Phase 3 in the eastern part of the city.

This 17.8 km elevated section comprises of 15 elevated stations, namely Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake, East Vinod Nagar-Mayur Vihar-II , Mandawali- West Vinod Nagar, I.P. Extension, Anand Vihar ISBT, Karkardooma, Karkardooma Court, Krishna Nagar, East Azad Nagar, Welcome, Jaffrabad, Maujpur- Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar.

The main highlight of this section will be the presence of three interchange stations - Anand Vihar (with Blue Line), Karkardooma (with Blue Line) and Welcome (with Red Line). After the opening of this section, the Delhi Metro network will become 314 km long.

GOING GLOBAL

  • With the opening of this section, Delhi Metro has joined the league of top metro networks around the world which have an operational length of over 300 km like those in London, Beijing, Shanghai and New York. Now, it will be running 4,749 trips a day, the “highest ever” so far
