In a bid for image- makeover, the South civic body has started a full-fledged war with a drive against illegal constructions in the capital. South Delhi mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat on Wednesday took a meeting of all departments asking officers to change the perception of municipal bodies of being "corrupt".

The move has come after the Delhi High Court pulled up civic bodies for allowing illegal construction in the national capital. Earlier this month, South Corporation demolished seven such structures while sealing two others.

"The engineering department must keep deliberative as well as executive wing abreast about their action plan for the coming two days. It is important that swift actions is taken against unscrupulous builders in order to create a deterrent against the practice," said Sehrawat.

This is not all. The civic body also suspended its three engineers in Chhattarpur area for not taking action against rampant unauthourised construction.

The corporation's building department conducted its demolition drive in the South Zone over the week in areas including Chhatarpur, Chirag Dilli, Khirki Extension, Krishna Park-Khanpur and Said-Ul-Ajaib, among others.

As many as seven properties were demolished and were left in an uninhabitable condition. Besides, two properties were sealed in Khirki and Rajpur Khurd areas, respectively.

The officers claimed that local residents created hindrance and protested against the demolition action.

The demolition has been done under Building Control Regulations notified in the Master Plan-2021 and Building Bye-Laws- 2016.

To further discourage illegal construction, other government departments including Delhi Jal Board and power discoms have been asked to disconnect the water and electricity connections of such properties.

Recently, the HC had observed that illegal constructions are coming up in the city because some MCD officials might have connived with the builder. Instructions are given to demolish the buildings thereby resulting in the loss of the tax payers' money.
