Two years ago, when Maira (name changed) got a missed call from an unknown number, she had no idea how it would affect her life. A brief spell of missed calls turned into hour-long chats and then into a full-fledged affair between Maira, a mother of two, and Zakir.

The affair, however, turned ugly. Zakir did his best to persuade Maira to marry him, but she refused. The scorned lover then made a plan to pressurise her, and in the process kidnapped her two children.

The kidnappings first came to light on Tuesday when the children's father made a PCR call reporting that his kids aged eight and 10 had gone missing. He said that he suspected the involvement of a man known to his wife.

Though the accused kept his mobile phone off the entire time, police were able to track down Zakir due to his addiction to social media. He was traced and following a raid the children were rescued from Loni in Ghaziabad.

DCP northeast, Ajit Singla said, during the investigation it was found that all the addresses and hideouts that the accused had mentioned to the mother, turned out to be fake. Technical surveillance also revealed that the SIM cards being used by Zakir had been obtained through the use of fake IDs.

"A number of raids were conducted in Bhajanpura and nearby areas. Hideouts in NCR in Prem Nagar, Balram Nagar in Loni, Ghaziabad were also raided. On Thursday, it was found that the suspect had contacted the mother and was mounting pressure on her to leave her husband and marry him," the DCP said.

Singla added that though the suspect had kept his phone off, he could not avoid using internet and social media on his phone at short intervals. A police team raided the identified location and found the children. The accused managed to flee.

But interactions with the children led police to the suspect's hideout — a residence in Prem Nagar, Ghaziabad. The residence was raided following which the accused, 22-year-old Zakir alias Raja, was arrested, the DCP said.
