A couple expecting twins, were stunned when they were told that they were blessed with a baby girl on December 21 and were handed over a single child at Safdarjung hospital. The couple, who now suspects foul play, has alleged that the other child was kidnapped and has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police. Vikas, the father, who works as a peon in a bungalow in Vasant Kunj said, “We had got an ultrasound done in her eighth month of pregnancy and the report mentioned that my wife was carrying twins. She had a normal delivery and said that she had seen a nurse carrying something wrapped in white clothes.” He also alleged, that a nurse informed them that their second baby might have been ‘dumped in the garbage’.

Police said that they had received a complaint from the couple on December 27.

“They claim that their prenatal tests were indicating two foetuses. The complaint has been sent to the Medical Superintendent for a report. The reply is awaited,” said a senior police officer.

The couple has also approached the Delhi Commission for Women who has issued a notice to the hospital and the police in the matter. “We received a complaint on Friday from a woman whose delivery took place in Safdarjung Hospital on December 22, 2016. She has claimed that she delivered two babies but was handed over only one by the hospital authorities,” DCW Chief Swati Maliwal said.

Dr AK Rai, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital said, “The allegations are baseless. As per the HOD, she gave birth to only one baby and the woman also accepted that. She had come to our hospital on the 33rd day of her pregnancy with an ultrasound report. We did the initial investigation and could not find two babies. We asked her to get a second ultrasound done but she didn’t come after that. She only returned when she was in labour.”
