Don't be surprised if next time a Delhi government official gives you a humble smile even after having a heated argument over your pending issue. The officials from the department of revenue will be participating in an orientation programme which will teach them about Mahatma Gandhi's ideals and ethics of non-violence communication. The Delhi government's revenue department is the first one to opt for the orientation programme.

The three-day programme starting from Tuesday will have officials being trained about Gandhi's means of non-conflict resolution, non-violent communication and stress management. The programme will be moderated by Gandhi Smriti Darshan Samiti.

For Gandhi, non-violence was not simply the absence of physical violence. Self-rule and radical democracy in which everyone participates in the governance process were also part of Gandhi's idea of nonviolence.

"Such orientation programmes are extremely important as we are dealing with the general public on a regular basis. Many times, there are arguments and the residents are unhappy with the solutions we suggest them. The idea to have this programme is to minimise the use of those words that antagonise people," said an official from the revenue department.

According to the sources, a similar orientation programme was carried out by the Gandhi Smriti Darshan with Jammu& Kashmir police. For the Delhi government, a customised training programme has been prepared.

"They will also teach us on how to maintain the work-life balance. Most of the officials are overburdened with the work which also affects their personal lives. In this customised programme, the officials will also be taught how to get rid of the stress," added the official.

The bureaucracy in the capital is still holding a silent protest as a mark of their altercation with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and the ministers over the alleged assault of Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. A 1986-batch officer IAS officer, Prakash had filed a complaint with Delhi police in which he alleged that he was assaulted, abused and manhandled by AAP MLAs while discussing the issue of delay in the release of TV advertisement on completion of three years of AAP government. However, the AAP government claimed that the meeting was about ration system.
