The #RapeRoko campaign, which started after an eight-month-old girl was raped by a 27-year-old man in the Capital, to urge the government to give death penalty to the rapists of children within six months is gaining international support. People in Dallas, San Francisco, California, and other cities across the United States are coming together to conduct signature campaigns to support the cause.

"The idea is to channelise anger into meaningful action. Through 'Satyagraha', we are reaching out to more people to demand adequate deterrence against sexual crimes, especially rape of minors. We are already seeing small achievements as repressed voices are coming out, but we will not stop until a robust criminal justice system is made," said Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal, in a telephonic conversation with DNA
The campaign is gaining support both on social media and through the 'sign the letter to the Prime Minister' on the #RapeRoko website. In the first week, the commission received over 70,000 signed letters from different countries and the number has crossed the mark of one lakh now.

Amy Volume, a Canadian Radio Jockey, is also supporting the campaign through social media with hashtags like #EndRapeCulture and #JusticeForBabyNirbhaya.

"Is the Commission only responsible for providing little relief and succor to the victims?" asked Maliwal.

The DCW chief has not spent the last 26 nights at her office and is planning to not return till the International Women's Day on March 8. "I wanted to experience a coma/pause in my life and did not want to move on from the rape of the eight-month-old baby. I am hopeful that through this campaign people across ideologies and regions will come support us," she said.

The commission has written letters to the Members of Parliament asking for support to the campaign. Maliwal has sought appointments of few women MPs like Maneka Gandhi, Sushma Swaraj, Sonia Gandhi, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Jaya Bachchan to seek their support to the cause.

The eight-month-old rape victim had to go through a three-hour-long surgery, where her injuries required stitches in her private parts. She was critical and was kept in the ICU for several days. Between 2012 and 2014, the Delhi Police registered 31,446 cases of crime against women but less than 150 convictions have been made.
