Rain comes as respite from scorching heat

The Capital woke up to a pleasant Wednesday morning as pre-monsoon showers brought the much-needed respite from last week's blazing heat. According to the MET officials, the rains brought down the maximum temperature to 34.7 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal.

A rainfall of 11.8 mm was recorded at the Safdarjung observatory between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, officials at the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional weather forecasting centre said.

Maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 37 degrees Celsius, which came down by 3.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

The officials, however, warned that hot days are expected to return to the city between June 2 and 6, when the temperature is expected to touch 42 degrees Celsius again. "The temperature will return to normal, hovering between 39 and 40 degrees Celsius, over the weekend. It is expected to be above normal till June 2, because of the return of dry westerly winds over northern India," an official said.
