Delhi University (DU) Professor Prasanta Chakravarty, who was kicked and punched in the stomach during a student protest at Ramjas College on February 22, has suffered internal injuries. Chakravarty, who was almost strangled with his muffler, allegedly by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), was admitted to the Fortis hospital early on Sunday.

Chakravarty complained of "shooting abdominal pain," after which he fell unconscious. A Facebook post by him on Sunday said: "diagnosed with contusion and concealed spasms on the right abdomen and on spinal extensor muscles, effected by heavy boot kicks perhaps. a couple of ribs also impaired--will require protracted treatment. pain needs to abate first now. intravenous meds and drips on. if that does not work, other possibilities will be explored. mlc report of Feb 22 followed up by the hospital authorities. heartfelt thanks to all of you."

"I am under treatment and unable to talk now. Medicines and drips are on and I will take some more time to heal," Chakravarty told DNA. According to the hospital administration, Chakravarty visited the hospital early on Sunday. Sources in the hospital said that Chakravarty came with pain in right flank and back. His Ultrasound scan and X-ray were done and all reports were normal, and he was discharged in two hours.

On February 22, he was in the Arts Faculty of DU, and then at Ramjas College to support the students protesting the cancellation of talks by JNU scholars Shehla Rashid and Umar Khalid. A clash between AISA (All India Students Association, the student wing of the CPI-ML) and ABVP, the student wing of the BJP, broke out that afternoon. Soon, it took a violent turn, with students being beaten up everywhere. A mob beat up Prof Chakravarty, pushed him to the ground, and kicked him repeatedly.

While the ABVP and AISA have taken turns to blame each other for the violence, the Delhi Police are yet to take any action. Many journalists and students at Ramjas have blamed the ABVP responsible.

Even a two-day annual fest organised by the Department of History of the college has been postponed for a few days. The fest was earlier scheduled for Monday. Students are now waiting for the next course of action. Most of them haven't been to the college since the incident took place.
