A vigilance inquiry has been ordered against some Delhi Police personnel, after residents of the Madhu Vihar area in east Delhi alleged that cops picked them up from their apartment while they were partying in the early hours of New Year's Eve, without any charges, and then released them the next morning only after taking a bribe.

Manisha Pandey, a resident of A-block in Madhu Vihar, in a written complaint to the east Delhi DCP, stated that she and her seven friends — five men and two women — had arranged a get-together at her apartment. Around 2 am, some cops barged in and dragged all of them to the police station, without any charges.

"We were not drinking, but even if we were, is there any prohibition on alcohol in Delhi? We were about to go to bed after dinner when this happened. We were not even playing loud music," said a disgruntled Manisha, who works as a social worker with an NGO.

"Despite our repeated requests, they refused to inform us about the specific charges against us. When we persisted, the constables misbehaved with us and used foul language," she added.

The eight people were kept in remand till 8 am on January 1 without any explanation. The five men were tested for alcohol but when nothing came in the test, they were released in the morning after paying Rs 5,000, the complainant claimed.

"We have sought an inquiry into the matter and will not take any action until the probe is finished. There were PCR calls from the colony, some neighbours might have had complained. We are looking into the matter," said Omvir Singh, DCP, east Delhi.
