Tensions ran high on Thursday as the students of the Left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA) and National Students' Union of India (NSUI) carried out protests outside the Delhi Police Headquarters at ITO and at Delhi University's North Campus simultaneously.

They demanded action against police personnel and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members, whom they accused of beating students and manhandling female protesters on Wednesday.

The police tried its best to convince the students to calm down. The Special Commissioner of Police SBK Singh personally came to the protest venue, took questions from the students and ensured proper action against errant policemen and students.

DU student and AISA president Kawaljeet Kaur said, "AISA has called for a nation-wide protest against the violence they perpetrated fellow students and the inefficiency of Delhi police in controlling the situation."

Demanding stern action against authorities, hundreds of students also demanded registration of a separate case against the brutality meted out on them by the Delhi Police and students of the ABVP. The protesting students alleged the FIR filed by the police did not mention most of the incidents like attack by ABVP members and police and demanded a new FIR in the case.

The Delhi Police was forced to keep up with the demands of the students and later issued an order transferring the case to the Crime Branch. "The Crime Branch of Delhi Police will now investigate the case," said Special Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak.

In the meantime, at the varsity campus, protests ended in the evening but the Delhi Police doubled the deployment of personnel there. At North Campus, ABVP and NSUI carried out a demonstration and march separately.

"Whatever happened at Ramjas college on Wednesday is highly condemnable. Who is ABVP to declare someone national or anti-national? How can they label Umar Khalid an anti-national when even a charge sheet hasn't been filed against him?" said Akshay Lakra, president NSUI, Delhi.
