Police arrest wanted criminal with Rs 50,000 reward on his head

A wanted criminal, Chand Mohammad, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was arrested after an encounter with the south-east district police late on Tuesday night. The Commissioner of Police had declared the reward after Mohammad had opened fire at a guard during a robbery in Jamia Nagar in February this year.

"Chand Mohammad alias Matru alias Ajju, 26, has been involved in 14 cases of robbery and has also been booked under the Arms Act. Earlier, in the first week of February, he and his associates Arif, Sazid, and Zahid had committed a robbery. While Arif was arrested from the location, others were absconding," Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-east) Romil Baaniya said.

Recently, the Special Staff of the district received a tip-off that Mohammad would be coming to Khizrabad in New Friends Colony to meet a couple of his friends. The police officers then erected a barricade at a picket point. Around 1.30 am, they spotted two persons on a motorcycle coming from the Zakir Nagar area.

"They first took a left for Faridabad. On seeing the police picket, they tried to take a U-turn. They, however, lost the balance, and fell off the vehicle. The duo then started running and the police officers chased them on foot. They then fired three rounds at the cops," Baaniya said.

In return, the police party also fired two rounds. While the officers were successful in arresting Mohammad, the pillion rider managed to escape. A sophisticated pistol along with four live cartridges and a stolen Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle was recovered from him.
