AIIMS decision of preponing the date of surgery of a 13-year-old patient has caused furore among many patients on the waiting list, who think they too deserve timely treatment. This comes after a minor patient, named Ankit, was granted a date in the year 2024 in the waiting list for surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. AIIMS was forced to revising the date of surgery to 2018 after a probe was conducted by the Minister of Health.

Ankit Vishwakarma, a student from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, suffers from Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), meaning he has a hole in the heart. He was referred to the premier institute by doctors at the BHU Medical College. Due to long waitlists at the hospital, he was given a 5.5 years late surgery date of 2024.

Anupriya Patel, Minister of State in the MoH, called Ankit back to AIIMS and prepone his surgery to 2018 after conducting a probe. While the hospital has now confirmed to help him and arrange the resources this year, the preponement has angered other patients, who have been raising questions at the "impartiality".

"While I wish a good life for Ankit, this also makes me sad that when my four-month-old daughter, who suffers from a congenital disease where both her coronary arteries are on one side, has been given a 2021 date due to unavailability of doctors from the Cardio department. My daughter is critical and is this because I could not get the Minister to call the hospital?," said Sanat Singh.

Soon after the call from the Minister, Ankit's father Sunil Vishwakarma was invited by the AIIMS Director, Dr Randeep Guleria, who saw all the medical reports of Ankit and asked the family to choose a date of their convenience. While it has been decided that the surgery will take place in 2018, Sunil is still deciding on the date.

With a footfall of over 10,000 patients every day and 2,000 in-house patients, it is the busiest hospital in the country and the waitlist for a surgery could range between few hours and few years depending upon the severity and availability.
