To ensure the safety of women and keep the crime rate under check this festive season three municipal corporations of the city have decided to light up 100 dark spots in each of the wards under their jurisdiction by installing street lights.

The corporations intends to illuminate these spots before Diwali, which were identified as vulnerable to crime. The spots were zeroed in after a survey carried out by Delhi Police. The locals have been complaining to police about the dark or problematic spots. The last-minute move comes at a time when the BJP-ruled municipal corporations are bound for polls next year.

The South Corporation which had identified 5,000 dark spots in its area will be installing 50 street poles and 100 LED lights in each of its 104 wards. The new lights will be in addition to the 1.8 lakh LED lights installed in the SDMC area under its project of replacing two lakh conventional street lights with energy efficient LED lights.

"We have already called for tenders for 100 lights per ward. It will be done at a cost of around Rs15 to18 crores. Of the 5,000 dark spots, 2,500 were identified by the police in their annual survey. Most places have poles but lights need to be installed there. Besides, poles have to be erected in back lanes, which often remain dark. We will be completing the work before Diwali," said, Shailendra Singh, chairman, standing committee, SDMC.

On the delay, Singh, said, "Since it was a big project, there are financial implications take time."

At the same time, the East Corporation too is gearing up to repair its sodium street lights in all its 64 wards.

"We have provided funds of Rs 2.5 lakh to each councillor for repair and maintenance of lampposts including semi and high-mast lights installed at major crossings and parks etc. We will ensure all dark spots are covered under it in the festive season."

Pravesh Wahi, chairman of North Corporation's standing committee, said, "We had already covered the dark zones in our area. Every year before Diwali we make sure all the lights are functional."
