To check the use of clean river water, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Noida Authority signed an MoU on Thursday, for an ambitious 36-km pipeline project, meant to transport Noida's wastewater to NTPC's Dadri plant for its use.

With this MoU, Noida will become the first city in North India to have a plant run by sewage water. Noida Authority will provide 80 million litres per day [MLD] to NTPC.

The MoU was signed by SK Das, group general manager and head of Dadri plant, and Samakant Srivastava, senior project engineer of Noida Authority. NTPC will fund the project.

To save clean water, the Union power ministry, on January 28, 2016, had issued a notification directing all NTPC plants to use treated wastewater for all its purposes. Besides saving clean river water, it would also help conserve fast-depleting groundwater.

According to Uttar Pradesh Ground Water Department (GWD), the level of underground water in both GB Nagar and Ghaziabad has been falling at the rate of over 1 metre every year from 2013 to 2017.

Samakant Srivastava, a senior project engineer of Noida Authority, said that Noida Authority will get around Rs 30 crore per year to supply the wastewater to NTPC. He added, "The 36-km pipeline will be laid down from the sewage treatment plant (STP) in Sector 54 to NTPC's Dadri plant within three years."

To lay down the pipe, a survey of the route will be done by the Jal Nigam of Uttar Pradesh within the next three months, and Noida Authority will start work thereafter.

"In future, if the NTPC demands more water, Noida Authority will provide 80 MLD more," Srivastava added.

NTPC's Dadri plant uses 200 MLD from upper Ganga Canal that passes through the plant and groundwater as well. Noida Authority has six STPs and generates 150-200 MLD of wastewater every day.
