The Delhi government on Friday once again blamed the erratic weather conditions as one of the major reasons for the worsening air quality in the national Capital. The pollution board of the Capital has also stated that the pollution levels in Delhi have been close to what they were in 2015.

In a review meeting called by Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) blamed the weather conditions for the prevailing air quality. "The pollution levels are influenced by multiple factors, such as meteorological parameters, especially wind speed and direction, humidity and solar index. Hence, there has been an increase in the air pollution, as the national Capital is facing foggy conditions at present," a DPCC official said.

An Environment Department official further said: "In winters, particularly when fog develops in the city, a general perception prevails that the air quality worsens. But the fact is fog and smog are two separate environmental phenomena."

He added: "Analysis of the data of different pollutants shows that there is no major difference in the concentration of particulate matter in the last 10 days, when compared to data of corresponding days last year."

The Delhi government has been making efforts to check the rising air pollution levels and has announced multiple pilot projects in this regard, including induced-draft air treatment systems. The government has also asked its departments to check, in collaboration with the Union government departments, the feasibility of cow dung, sewage sludge, and alum sludge to make fuel pellets, tiles, bricks and other useful materials.

The government is also working on designing a air pollution control system for a green crematorium, a passive venting system for dumpsites and a clean tandoor community kitchen system.

Pollution levels in the national Capital have constantly remained alarming, especially after Diwali. As immediate measures, the government had ordered sprinkling of water on roads, vacuuming of dust and installation of air purifiers. Apart from the water sprinkling, however, the rest of the projects are yet to begin.
