Police have arrested Manveer Tewatia — a farmer leader who hit headlines during the bloody clash between the police and farmers in Bhatta-Parsaul villages on May 2011 — following a non bailable warrant against him from the Special SC/ST Judge of Gautam Budh Nagar. Tewatia was arrested on Tuesday morning and has been sent to jail.

According to police, Tewatia was arrested following an information that he is hiding in a house in Dankaur area.

“Tewatia had been absconding for several months and escaped appearing before court against his criminal charges in one of his old cases of the time of Bhatta-Parsaul riots, following which the Gautam Buddha Nagar district court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him for not appearing before court. We had got secret information that Tewotia is hiding in a house in Dankaur. A team was formed and he was nabbed this morning,” said Farmood Ali Pundir, SHO, Dankaur police station.

Police produced Tewatia in the court on Tuesday morning and have sent him to jail under sections 147(Punishment for rioting), 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 364 (Kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 325 (Punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt).

Tewatia came into the limelight after he led anti-land acquisition agitation at Bhatta-Parsaul in Gautam Buddh Nagar in 2011. He has around 31 criminal cases against him including 14 charges related to murder, several cases related to attempt to murder and kidnapping.

He was arrested by special operation group of the UP police from Hauz Khas, New Delhi on July 9, 2011 and was sent to judicial custody. He was later released on bail and went incommunicado in connection with the violence over land acquisition in Bhatta-Parsaul.
