A two and a half-year-old boy who was subjected to acid attack and thrown in a garbage bin in Gurugram two weeks ago, underwent his first plastic surgery on Saturday. The NGO 'Make Love not Scars', that advocates the rights of acid attack victims, has stepped in and through a campaign on a crowdfunding website, has raised more than Rs 11 lakh in less than 24 hours. Around 627 people have donated money towards the treatment for the victim.

"We found out about the victim on December 27, almost two weeks after the attack took place," said Shaheen Malik, an activist and an acid attack survivor herself. "In the interim, the victim had received initial treatment, which due to unhygienic conditions at home was badly infected and needed urgent care," the activist added.

The victim was first admitted to a private hospital where he was treated for two days before being shifted to Gangaram Hospital.

"In desperation, we reached out to the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) who took cognizance of the matter despite it falling outside their jurisdiction, and also took care of treatment costs. The money that was raised through crowdfunding will be utilised for future medical treatments," Mailk said.

On Monday, the victim is slated to be moved yet again, this time to a super speciality hospital where he will undergo all future treatments.

DNA tried to speak to the victim's family, however, they were unreachable. Gobind, 19, the accused was arrested on Sunday by Gurugram police from Rajiv Chowk in Gurugram when he was trying to flee from the city. An FIR has been registered under the relevant sections at the Gurgaon City police station.

"A case under section 346 (wrongful confinement), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 A (punishment for throwing acid) and 364 (kidnapping) has been registered. Further investigations are underway," said Manish Sehgal, ACP Gurugram.

The child was attacked after his mother had an argument with her neighbour. After this fight, the neighbour's brother kidnapped the child in revenge, attacked him, and smothered him. Thinking the child was dead, the kidnapper threw him in a garbage bin at an isolated location.

The father of the victim had also alleged that his wife was being stalked and threatened by the accused.

The child had undergone treatment at Safdarjung hospital. He had inhaled fumes and had around 10 per cent burn injuries around his face. However, the treatment for the victim was fraught with much confusion and came after timely interventions of organisation across the board.

Under a scheme for acid attack victims floated by the Haryana government, the victim who is a male child would not be eligible for compensation. This was a big blow for his father, who is a daily wage labourer, and was not able to afford the expensive medical care his son now requires.
