The newly-inaugurated super-specialty block in Safdarjung hospital will take off the burden from the existing staff and the institute. The 800-beded new block was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

Eight departments - cardiac surgery, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, respiratory medicine and endocrinology units will be available in the block. Apart from general ward facility, the super specialty block has 125 ICU beds and 14 operation theatres. There are 206 beds dedicated for private healthcare facility which has six operation theatres.

"The government is working to revamp Safdarjung hospital by building a super specialty block at a cost of Rs 1300 crore; with a new 500-bed capacity. The hospital will now become the biggest emergency care hospital in India," Modi said.

The PM also laid the foundation stone for National Centre for Aging at AIIMS in the Capital. He said that a healthy nation could be formed only from a healthy society. "In the past four years, there has been a considerable increase in the healthcare system of the country. With the help of central government's intervention policy, we are moving in a direction where even the middle-class and the poor can get better health care service," he said.

Apart from this, he also inaugurated 300-bedded Power Grid Vishram Sadan in AIIMS.

During the same event, the PM also inaugurated motorable tunnel connecting AIIMS to the Trauma Centre.

Earlier this year, angry over the under-utilisation of the 800-beds at the super-specialty block in Safdarjung hospital, a parliamentary panel had recommended the government to pass the blocks to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

"The committee, in its 106th report on Demands for Grants 2018-19 for the department of health, had stated that beds of the new super-specialty building of Safdarjung hospital are lying under-utilised due to non-availability of doctors and staff. On the other hand, there is a long waiting duration to avail cardiac care in AIIMS and GB Pant hospital. It is thus recommended that the center arranges for doctors and staff at the hospital for optimum utilisation of available beds in its new building," said the panel.

Currently, there is a high patient load in both the neighbouring hospitals crossing over 8,000 to 10,000 patients every day. This load makes the waiting process much longer. In the last few days, the added beds will increase the patient admission by 500 every day.
