Inspired by the iconic Times Square buildings in New York, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is all set to light up the facade of its Palika Kendra building at Sansad Marg in Lutyens’ Delhi.

The 21-storey building, tallest in the area, will have live streaming of national and international events connecting the city to other capital cities of the world. The move, made under the ‘Smart City’ project, is expected to take off on January 26 next year.

The building will be illuminated from 11th floor and above, with the display covering 1,350 sqm of the total area, said senior NDMC officials. The project, estimated to cost Rs 6 crore, is being undertaken by Philips India.

“We have already awarded the project to the company. We have a six-month deadline to finish the work but we are trying to complete it by January 26 itself. Palika Kendra will then become one-of-its-kind building in the Capital. It is a must for any smart city, among other things,” said NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar.

Besides making the area vibrant, the move is expected to generate revenue through advertising the Centre and state governments’ policies.

“Videos of important events across the globe will be flashed across the building. The lit area will have a programmer linked to the internet. For instance, the PM’s address, election results in any country and images of historical landmarks and places across the world will be a part of the display,” said an official working on the project.

In addition, as part of the plan, three LED screens (10x20”)  will be installed at three locations, including Khan Market, Connaught Place and Dhaula Kuan, which will advertise government policies and display public information, such as air quality index of the area.

“The LED screens will be for dissemination of information, as these are the three major centers of the Capital, having a high footfall on any given day. We have to set up censors and a lab for picking up details about air quality and weather forecasts,” Kumar added.
