The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) elected Narender Chawla as its new mayor on Thursday. Chawla, 58, the sitting councillor from Janakpuri ward, said his focus will be on parking, sanitation, health and education.

"I will make sure that the Swachhta Mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is implemented with added commitment and enhanced public partnership," said the newly elected mayor, as he conducted the first meeting of the House.

He also said that he will focus on conserving water in the city, which is facing a problem in various parts, and make an action plan for the same.

"An action plan will be prepared after discussions with the experts and technocrats in the water sector," he said.

He also announced to launch a useful helpline for the redressal of the grievances of the residents on priority and maintain an updated database.

To start with, Chawla will conduct a surprise inspection of all the 104 wards.

Describing parking a major problem, Chawla said that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will be requested to sanction land for the construction of a number of stack parking on the basis of consultations with the RWAs and market associations.

"Parking has been a major issue also resulting in congestion and pollution. I will work on providing more parking spaces. I have identified sites in my ward and will do that for the rest of the region, too. Sanitation facilities also need more attention," Chawla said.
