Panic struck a residential colony of East Delhi's Madhu Vihar locality when a woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were found hanging from the ceiling of their house. Police suspect the woman first killed her daughter and then ended her life by hanging because of a turbulent married life or financial constraints. Family members and her husband are being questioned, police said.
The incident unfolded during the early hours of Tuesday, as the women's husband, Abhi Kumar, who returned home in the morning, found the room locked from inside. When the woman, identified as Abreena, a nurse by profession at a reputed city hospital, did not respond even after Kumar's repeated attempts, the man alerted the neighbours and they broke the door open.
"After breaking the door open, they found the mother-daughter duo hanging from the ceiling. They were immediately brought down and rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared them dead on arrival. The hospital staff then called up the police and a case was registered," said a senior police officer. Police have not found any suicide note till now.
Police said a dupatta was used by the woman to first hang her daughter and then herself. "Since the room was locked from inside, prima facie it looks like a case of suicide. However, inquest proceedings have been initiated and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. The woman's husband is also being questioned to find out if she had been under depression off late, or took the drastic step following regular domestic quarrels. Woman's family members, friends and colleagues from the workplace are also being contacted to know more details," the officer informed.
