A year after the Medical Council of India's (MCI) initiative to keep a constant vigil on the standard of medical education being imparted through CCTV solutions, under its Digital Mission Mode Project (DMMP), the medical body — on Tuesday — launched its 'Go-Live' mission to keep a check on classroom attendance and fake doctors.
The MCI has directed all states to provide a Unique Permanent Registration Number (UPRN) to every doctor registered in their jurisdiction. Through this they said that a doctor's history could be tracked.
"MCI's DMMP project will streamline and infuse more efficiency and transparency in the medical body governance. The online faculty monitoring system will enable the Ministry and MCI to monitor the presence of faculty members in the colleges. This will improve the standards of medical education and will provide our nation with better qualified medical practitioners," said Dr Jayshree Mehta, president, MCI.
As MCI went online on Tuesday, doctors said they they already have 1,10,000 faculties across 425 medical colleges in India for biometric attendance and over 10 lakh doctors recorded in the Indian Medical Register (IMR). These doctors can mark their attendance at 4,500 machines installed at various locations on the colleges premises.
With the new system in line, anyone can background check a doctor with the UPRN number.
The system would show doctor's previous place of work, work experience, education etc. This way MCI and MOHFW are looking to tackle the problem of fake doctors in the country.
