A 27-year-old man has been arrested for creating a fake fundraising website in the name of Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) on Saturday. The fake website also invited applications for various posts with a fee, which had to be submitted online. The accused had earned around Rs 20 lakhs in a span of just a week.
"The accused Sumit Kumar resides in Haryana and is married. He had recently appeared for the judicial services exam and was pursuing his LLM also. He had earlier done his LLB," said BK Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi district.
MK Prabhat, Under Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development (Women Welfare Section) approached the police and informed them that an unauthorised organisation or an individual had set up a false website in the name of the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The website also had the logo of the ministry on it. It offered various jobs for different posts and while applying for the jobs, the page was re-directed to online fee payment for the application."The complainant also shared the link to the fake website (www.wcdo.org.in). Since the official from the ministry revealed that it had not announced or put up any job offers on their website, a case was registered at Parliament Street Police Station," added Singh.
Investigating officials scanned the fake website and procured the details of the payments made from the bank and the relevant statement as well. The police officials even froze Kumar's bank account prompting him to come out and consult his branch at Karol Bagh, following which he was taken into custody.
Details of the persons who had deposited the money for the jobs through the website were also analysed. The police zeroed in on Kumar and later arrested him. During interrogation, he revealed that in March this year, he along with two of his friends, Navita Nagpal and Anip set up an organisation in the name of Women and Child Development, which was similar to the name of the Ministry of Women and Child Development. They later got it registered in the office of Sub-Registrar in Central Delhi. At the same time, the website was made with the help of a web designer identified as Ankur and a bank account at the ICICI was opened for the same.
JUST AS REAL
- Sumit Kumar never deposited any money in the account. A logo of the Government of India was also uploaded on the website, without permission from the ministry, so that the applicants don’t doubt the authenticity of the process.
- The fake website of Kumar had advertisements for around 6,715 vacancies.
