The Delhi unit of Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to sound its bugle for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with the 'Purvanchali Mahakumbh' that is being organised in the capital on Sunday. BJP president Amit Shah is likely to be the chief guest with other senior leaders in attendance too, at the event at Ramlila ground. The event is also being touted as a show of strength of Purvanchali voters. The Poorvanchal Morcha of BJP is behind the programme.

According to party members, around 1.25 lakh Purvanchalis are expected to attend the programme. The party is banking on the popularity of Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari who is a Purvanchali himself, to draw the crowd and cash in the 2019 polls. "The community that is largely dominated by people from east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, had strongly supported BJP in municipal elections last year, helping it win most of the seats. The votebank commands enough influence to sway things,"a senior leader said. Tiwari was handed over the reigns of local leadership in November 2016, months ahead of the MC polls to utilise this votebank. Another reason for the rally, claim sources, is to put to rest the resentment and dissent brewing amid local unit cadres against the North East Delhi MP.

Meanwhile, BJP Purvanchal Morcha president Manish Singh said, "The mega event will be addressed by BJP chief Amit Shah and many other senior leaders including cabinet ministers in the Modi government. It will also help in strengthening the community's support for Tiwari and highlight development work done by the Modi government in UP, Bihar and Jharkhand where Purvanchalis come from."

Plans have been in place for the grand show for the past two months. Singh shared that more than 15,00 buses will be used to ferry people attending the rally from all parts of the city. "We have already exhausted over three lakh invitation cards that were printed for the event. We have now placed an order for 50,000 more," he said.

Purvanchalis constitute roughly 40 per cent of the total electorate in Delhi. The capital has prominent Purvanchali stronghold in several constituencies like Sangam Vihar, Badarpur, Kirari, Burari, Rithala, Tughlakabad, Dwarka, and Laxmi Nagar among others, where they command 45 per cent of the votebank.
