This is the first toilet equipped with facilities of sanitary pad dispenser and disposal
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday launched the first public ‘Pink Toilet’ equipped with sanitary pad vending machine and incinerator in the city.
The toilet dedicated to women was launched in southwest Delhi’s PVR Vikaspuri market on the International Day of Girl Child. The toilet has been designed in a systematic manner to provide other incidental facilities like feeding area for the mothers.
While the three municipal corporations — North, South, and East — under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) had announced opening toilets for women, as well as general at public places and busy markets, this is the first toilet with a sanitary pad dispenser.
“The pink toilet is being opened at a place which witnesses substantial footfall, particularly of women and young girls. This will help create a healthy and hygienic environment as well as ensure the safety of women,” said Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Mayor, SDMC.
The civic body, said Sehrawat, intends to open more such toilets in crowded markets to provide women a safe place to relieve themselves.
“I urge users to keep the toilet clean for the next user. PVR, Vikaspuri is a major center for shopping. This will go a long way in instilling a sense of security in women. Besides, all the petrol pumps have also been asked to offer a similar facility,” the mayor said.
Earlier this year, the civic body had made toilets available in hotels and restaurants in its jurisdiction.
The corporations had received initial funds of Rs 120 crore in 2015 from the Centre under the SBM to build toilet blocks, besides other sanitation work in the Capital.
According to the SBM guidelines, at a distance of every kilometer, there must be a toilet complex available.
According to a report by the north corporation on sanitation earlier this year, the civic body, which has over 800 toilet blocks under it, has built 50 women toilet seats over the last year, which became functional a few months ago. The east corporation which has 400 toilet blocks under it has built 70 new blocks under the mission.
