Family members of the deceased women have refuted the police's suspicion of a property dispute leading to the killings and said that they suspect the labourers, who had been working in the house for the past fortnight, of being the culprits.

The house where the murder took place early Saturday morning is a sprawling property and houses over 40 people from seven families. Owned by the Jindal family, the house was established in 1932. The family deals in the oil business.

According to the police, the house was being white-washed, and one of the deceased had an altercation with a labourer, hours before she was killed. An initial probe had revealed friendly entry, bringing in the possibility that someone who was known to the family was behind the killings. This also brought to fore the possibility of a property dispute, which the police are looking into.

However, family members continue to refute these allegations.

"Yesterday, one of Urmila's daughters had an argument with a labourer who was whitewashing the cars. On being scolded, the labourer responded back angrily. His contractor was also contacted and a complaint was made. We suspect the role of these labourers behind the murder," said Rakesh Jindal, Urmila's nephew.

Another member of the family, Shakun Jindal, said that these labourers returned to work on Saturday morning but the family suspects that this was done so that they would not come under the police radar.

"We have been living together since 1932 and the family is famous all around. There has never been any property dispute in the family. The crime scene itself explains that it was a robbery attempt. The killers were professionals as all the deceased had their throats slit," Shakun said.

On asking if any of the 40 family members heard the screams of the victims, one said that they did not as they were asleep.

"The incident probably happened between 3 am and 5 am when the killers attacked. We were all asleep with our room locked and air conditioners on. Unfortunately, we did not hear any alarm being raised by the victims. The accused knew that there were many people on the premises and therefore took precautions like covering the faces of the deceased with towels and pillows so that they did not scream," he added.

The family also said that they would request the police to focus on the involvement of outsiders in the murder rather than probe into the family's personal matters.
